So after the older members had nipped up the Hockenhorn we returned to the hut to find breakfast almost ready.

After breakfast we all stepped out into the glorious sun and got ready to teach the scouts Ice Axe skills again.

All pose!

Andy J and Geoff managed to find a safe but steep bit of snow which was just five minutes walk away.

The steep bit.

So most of us trudged off in the morning sun to learn and practice ice breaks.  On this steep hill and in the hot morning air, Andy wasn't having to push people.  They were running and diving!

With Geoff and Derek to coach them, the scouts soon became quite proficient at throwing themselves down the snow and then stopping themselves with the ice axes.

The tricky bit was not getting snow and ice inside your clothes!

A Scout practices a normal break.
Another stop.

But coming to stop when sliding on your back is easy.  How often do people slip and end up sliding down on their backs?  We needed to practice more difficult falls.
