The last bit of snow before the hut was this entertaining little climb.  Andy at the front is about to follow the path off the snow and up the rocks to the right.

Andy leads the way up a short snow climb.

At this altitude some people will start to notice that they are slightly shorter of breath than they would normally expect.

The rock path.

The lads pose at the front and pause to look at the progress of the last group in the distance.  This rocky path continues steeply up the mountain for a while before leveling out.

A long days walking at altitude with heavy packs is starting to take its toll and rests and pauses are become more frequent. Still not far to go.

Walking across this glacier and staying in the hut will pass the Scouts off on several of the criteria for their High Adventure and Millennium awards.

Each day's hiking also counts towards their outdoor activity awards.

Knowing that Group 2 are not far ahead on a narrow rocky path Group 3 set off to explore the snow

Group 3
All three groups eventually reach the hut within about ten minutes of each other.  When we get there the view is initially obscured by low clouds and fog.
The hut at last.

Then suddenly, for a few brief minutes the fog clears and we get a beautiful view to the south.

Before dinner we take the opportunity to teach the Scouts how to use an ice axe to stop them slipping off the mountain.  But the absence of steep snow meant Andy L had to push them to give them some speed.

But as the sun set and it got cold, the promise of hot food became to good to resist and we soon headed into the hut for the night.
