IN THE GEMMI PASS
Day 11

Long before leaving for Kandersteg, the Explorer Scouts commenced planning a three day expedition. The first day would be the toughest, a cable car up into the Gemmi pass followed by a walk up and through the high pass.  For this section leaders would spot them from a distance.

Explorers

In the famous Sherlock Holmes story "The Final Problem" written by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson walk North through the Gemmi pass whilst trying to escape Professor Moriarty. It's on the section in the picture above that rocks tumble down on our heroes, allegedly pushed by Moriarty's henchmen. Our Explorers had no such problems on this expedition.

FOREST FIRES IN THE VALLEY

Switzerland enjoyed the hottest and driest summer in 80 years.  The Rhone valley is at a lower altitude than Kandersteg and is significantly warmer.  The Explorers saw forest fires whilst there and when they returned to Kandersteg the region was placed on alert. Extra safety rules were put in place on the Scout Camp site which was one of the very few areas permitted to have open fires.
