THE SLOW ASCENT

The Explorers being made of sterner stuff had to walk all the way up.  With the hot weather the plan was to get as high as we could before the sun got too hot.  Higher up it would be cooler anyway.

Despite leaving at a reasonable time we still rested in the shade and dunked our sun hats in mountain streams to cool off.  The Portuguese leaders advised us to leave at 4:30 am to avoid the heat and they were only going half way up!  What do they say about Mad dogs and Englishmen?

THE RIDGE AT LAST

THE RIDGE WITH STAND BEHIND

We rested at a cheesery just above the tree line and refilled our water bottles from a cattle trough.  We each took the opportunity to drink about a litre of water while supply was plentiful.

The next bit was by far and away the worst especially for the older Explorers who have some rather unhealthy habits!  The ascent to the ridge was steep and in brilliant sunshine.

THE VIEW FROM THE TOP

ON THE TOP

The view from the top was well worth the walk.  For many of the Explorers this was the first mountain they had ever climbed.
