At this stage the weather was still holding out but rain clouds
were ominously clustering around the peeks.
On the steep uphill section we get very hot so here you see
the 3rd Gidea Park "Pretty Boys" in there summer hiking gear.
Group
three about to start walking
Group three set off from Selden approximately 45 minutes behind group two.
Group
2 take a short rest at the Gfelalp cafe.
After climbing steeply in the
forest for about an hour we reach the Berghuss Gfelalp
hut. This is a small restaurant/bunk house perched
on the hillside. It can only be reached
by the footpath up which we had just walked.
Supplies are brought in on an aerial runway
type contraption.
By the time this picture was taken its difficult to see where
the snow ends and the cloud begins. In the distance, behind them is the Kanderfirn Glacier. This is much larger
than the glacier we will cross.
By now the hikers are above the tree line.
Andy,
Mike and Dan admire the view.
Group
one and two at lunch.
Group one stopped on a small plateau
for lunch and were soon joined by group two. From
this plateau they could clearly see the Lötschen glacier.
The highlight of the lunch break had to be seeing a very
large Avalanche fall onto the glacier in about the place we would
be crossing it. Well it all adds excitement!
Shortly after group one had departed from the lunch plateau to
start the final climb to the ice, Group three arrived.
Everyone seemed to be coping fine, hiking at their own
pace.
